Settings

These apply to the game in progress straight away. With auto-deal on the board always has a set, so the No set button is hidden. Easy and beginner start every hunt with 1 or 2 cards of a set already picked for you, and always deal 3 more when there's no set (an empty selection would give it away).

A "pool of 6" deals three of its colours each game — hit Reroll (here or the arrows next to New game) any time for a new trio, and Lock to keep the one you like. The fixed palettes are always the same three.

Timer

Hidden runs quietly and shows your time at the end. Off records no time.

Cards on a phone

Upright stacks the symbols down a tall card; wide keeps the landscape cards you see on a computer. Only applies when the board is taller than it is wide.

How to play

Every card has four attributes: number (1–3), shape, colour and shading (solid, shaded, outline). Three cards form a set when, for each attribute, they are either all the same or all different.

Tap three cards to claim a set. There's no rush: this is a solitaire puzzle. The game ends when the deck is empty and no set is left.

Scoring

Set found+1
Set found after one Hint or Add 3+0.5
Set found after any two of them0
No set when there really is none+5, then 3 cards are dealt
No set when there is one−0.5
Three cards that aren't a set0 (−0.5 if turned on in settings)

Add 3 is the safe way out when you're stuck: it deals three more cards, but the next set you find is worth half — and if you press it twice before finding one, that set is worth nothing. Pressing it on a board that really had no set costs nothing at all, and a correct No set call never costs you anything. The score never drops below 0.

How often is there really no set? On a 12-card board during play, about 1 in 16 (1 in 30 on a fresh deal, and about 1 in 100 with 15 cards). Two games in three have at least one, so the +5 comes up once or twice a game. A blind guess is wrong 94% of the time.

Hint highlights one card that belongs to a set, for the same half point Add 3 costs. Press it again and a second card of that same set lights up, which leaves that set worth nothing. The highlight stays until you find a set.

Difficulty

Normal is the real game. Easy starts each hunt with one card of a set already selected, so you only need the other two. Beginner selects two, leaving you one card to find. Scores for each difficulty are kept apart, so an easy game never lands in your normal best. Both always deal 3 more cards when the board has no set, because a missing head start would give that away, so there's no No set call. A hint shows a card you haven't been given, and never the last card of a set.

Game modes

Pick these in settings; they apply to the game you're playing right away.

Keyboard

Cards map to keys by position: top row 1–7, middle row Q–U, bottom row A–J. Esc clears the selection, , asks for a hint, . adds 3, / calls no set, N starts a new game.

Symbols and seeds

Geometric: square, triangle, circle. Classic: diamond, squiggle, oval, with the original red/green/purple available under Colours. Quilt blocks: star, hexagon, square-in-a-square. Garden: flower, leaf, mushroom. Playing cards: heart, spade, club. Cube (flat) and Cube: a 3×3 face, a Pyraminx and a Megaminx. In the Cube set, solid is the solved puzzle, outline is just the grid, and shaded shows a fixed pattern in the card colour. Cube images are built in; you can load them live from a visualcube server in settings (the server has to be up).

Every game has a seed. Tap it in the header to copy it, and open the page with ?seed=… to replay the same deal and colours.

The heart, diamond and spade are from Phosphor Icons (MIT, licence).
